CIN can offer  private consultancy in your game development, as well as workshops on the method to create interactive narratives in games.

Consultancy

CIN’s prime focus is to aid game developers to fully integrate the narrative design element of interactive fiction, within the game development process. CIN’s innovative approach achieves a new synergy of narrative and interaction by introducing unique methods for creating the motivational drive for a player to interact with a fictional world, thus bridging the gap between narrative design and game development.

A truly interactive game cannot anticipate every action of the player. This is the difference between a game narrative and a movie manuscript. Instead the designer must accommodate for the player’s action by evaluating the effect of each action. CIN’s consultants have years of experience in designing interactive narratives and teaching interactive narrative design methods, and they can fully evaluate the impact of player interaction with narrative content, through the process of Narrative Bridging. Moreover, the outcome of the Narrative Bridging method is also a full and complete mapping of all entities of the game space. CIN also offers coaching and training for teams that use, or want to use, Narrative Bridging as design method.

CIN’s main goals as consultants are

  • To improve player experience.
  • To help create more complex end challenging games by introducing a process that reduces design complexity.
  • To decrease costs due to difficulties associated with the detection and late adjustment of inconsistencies in the narrative.
  • To provide an overlook for the team and provide a transparency between all involved parties.

CIN in practise

  • We like to participate in the pre-production of the project.
  • We will ask for the premise and goal of the project.
  • We need to have contact with project leader, lead designer and lead programmer. Later on in the phase we will be able to create a transparency between the mentioned team, scriptwriters and level designers.
  • We will go through every single entity of the game to track its cognitive value in order to see that the results will enable the player to form patterns (be motivated) for interaction and to set up strategies for this.
  • Depending on the scope of the project CIN’s work can take between 1-4 weeks and can be divided during the iteration of the concept.

CIN will deliver

  • Well-formulated advice about improvements to enhance the player’s experience and motivation.
  • Advice for character development, dialogue improvements, game play, game mechanics and data models for implementations.
  • We will deliver a design document that can be easily accessed, understood and used, by the team.

CIN’s services

In order to provide your company with the help you need CIN can offer different alternatives of consultancy:

  • alt. 1: produce a coherent narrative using input from developer
  • alt. 2: review manuscripts for games
  • alt. 3: translate manuscripts into gameplay
  • alt. 4: intercept with game production with narrative problems

Workshop

CIN’s prime focus is to aid game developers to fully integrate the narrative design element of interactive fiction, within the game development process. CIN’s innovative approach achieves a new synergy of narrative and interaction by introducing unique methods for creating the motivational drive for a player to interact with a fictional world, thus bridging the gap between narrative design and game development.

Narrative Bridging is a method developed by CIN that merges the process of creating a narrative driven game concept, with the implementation of this into code. It is primarily a method to be used in the design phase with the purpose to aid a designer in the creation of narrative elements; controlling relationships and dependencies, and to create motivation for a player to take action in the game world.

Two day workshop

In the 2-day workshop we present the philosophy that forms the base of Narrative Bridging:

  • To show the principles behind Narrative Bridging and how it can aid the team throughout their working process.
  • To make the participants to see the possibilities which narratives bring, and how to manipulate it in order to create motivation for the player.
  • To provide tools for how to iterate through content with a narrative in order to form a well balanced interplay between the narrative, game play and game mechanics.

The workshop begins with a seminar that explains the fundamentals of Narrative Bridging. Following the seminar the participants start to work in groups on a given game concept. The work is carried out iteratively with more information about Narrative Bridging given, and extra assignments, to let the groups develop their interactive narratives further. The guided workshop and assignments will end with a presentation of the game concepts and a reflection on the outcome of their work with the narrative and Narrative Bridging.

There is a maximum limit of 30 participants.

Expected outcomes

This workshop will provide the participants with the tools for designing video games with a consistent and truly interactive narrative. Participants will be able to fully appreciate the requirement of interactive narrative design, from its creation, through its organization and control, and finally to the generation of a narrative in perfect balance with game-play and its mechanics. Above all, participants will understand how the narrative creates incentives for players to form strategies and make choices to participate in the game world.
